The International Journal of Creative Research Thoughts (IJCRT) published a report on research conducted by Dr. Ganesh Kelagina Beedu Shenoy in November 2021. The title of the research is “Are Job titles really important?” and the study was conducted to ascertain the significance of job titles to employees. The research covered topics such as the importance of job titles, flat organization structure, motivation theories supporting the importance of job titles, holacracy, title inflation, title negotiation, and criticisms published by management experts on flat organization structure and holacracy. The survey revealed that 93.2{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents agreed that job titles or designations are very important.

Key highlights of the research findings are:

• Most of the people surveyed agreed that the job titles are very important.
• 93.8{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} respondents agreed that promotions with a change in job title would motivate them.
• Though 78.7{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of the people surveyed said that the flat structure without any job title is bad. Surprisingly 21.3{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of the respondents are willing to work in a flat structure.
• The research has generated a remarkable result: 43.4{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents favor title inflation and are not against getting funny job titles. This clearly reveals that nearly half of the respondents like title inflation and funny job titles. 56.6{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} are against title inflation and funny job titles.
• The result revealed that 56.6{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents are willing to accept a promotion without any increase in salary, whereas 43.3{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents are not interested in a dry promotion. This result clearly proves that more than half of the surveyed people are interested in promotions with a higher job title even though the compensation is not increased.
• 66.2{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents have mentioned that both salary and job title are important to them, 13.8{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} have mentioned that job titles are important, and for 20{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b}, salary is important.
• The research revealed that 56.60{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} respondents are in favor of allowing employees to choose their own job title and 43.40{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} have answered that allowing employees to choose their own job title is bad.
• The survey uncovered that 62.9{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents are in favour and 37.1{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} are against title negotiation.
• Even though 72.5{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of surveyed people don’t want to work in an organization that doesn’t have any job titles, 27.5{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents are willing to work in organizations with a Holacratic structure in which no job titles exist.
• 90.10{8c657c652d9ccb8e023b76ec6e855c4f67e3d8310835fa7f7c0b431851e0a23b} of respondents agreed that job titles are important and will enhance a person’s social status.
